Dry skin

Oh the woos of dry skin!

No one likes it and yet most of get it. Maybe you live in a dry climate like Arizona or maybe you live where there are cold winters. Whatever the case, no one likes dry skin!

Let’s chat about what dry skin is and what is the best way to deal with it.

Why do we get dry skin?

Dry skin is a lack of moisture (I know, you are probably saying duh and rolling your eyes). Yet this is important to understand because it will help you in dealing with dry skin or better yet, preventing it.

Things that can effect how dry your skin is. Lack of water in your body! One of the best ways to help support your moisture levels in your skin, drink half your weight in ounces of water-not tea or coffee or juice-water!

Another key for moisturized skin is getting good quality fats (omegas) in your diet. Your skin gets 10% or less of the nutrients you take in through your mouth. That means its low on the priority scale compared to your heart or your brain. So if you aren’t getting high quality nutrition, including good fats, than your skin will tend to be dry.

Let’s talk what you can do topically. Wait for it…. the same thing! Shut the front door. Haha!

Water, water and more water!

You need to make sure you have some water component in your skincare. Water will provide the hydration. When you are dehydrated at a hospital, you don’t get an oil infusion, you get a saline bag which is basically salt water.

Now, I’m not recommending using salt water on your skin, but I am suggestion using a water component. Hydration comes from having enough moisture in your skin.  The first step in hydration is water ingredients.  Things like water, aloe, glycerin, teas, hydrosols….. We love turning a regular toner into a supercharged toner. Formulated to give skin a burst of hydration.

Where you live is important to consider when formulating a product.  If you live in Hawaii where they have year round moisture in their air, than you don’t need a supercharged hydrating product.  You would need hydration but not as much.  If you live in Arizona,  where it is arid and wants to suck moisture out of your skin, than you will need a ton of hydration.  If you live in Indiana, where you have a humid summer but dry winter, than your skincare products need to change with the season.  It’s one of the first things we ask our clients is where they live.  This allows us to customize how much water based ingredients we need to use.

Stop loosing your moisture!

Your skin has the ability to get moisture from the air if you live in a humid environment.  On the other hand, if you live in a dry climate, the air will suck the moisture out of your skin.  So how do we prevent the air from taking your hard earned moisture???

Good fats!!! Yup, you hear me-fats. Fats means oils. I know, I know….everyone freaks out at the idea of putting oil on their skin. It breaks you out, makes you oily, blah blah blah. The real truth, your skin needs healthy oils. It uses oils on the skin to provide a barrier, in effect preventing moisture from being taken from your skin. The key is finding the right oils for your skin. I like to also use herbs in my oil serums which lets me custom the oils even more. I’m all about maximizing every product for better results.

It’s all about finding the correct balance for your skin! So remember, oil and water are your friends for dry skin ☺
